a5c7b9f00b Three women, detectives with a mysterious boss, retrieve stolen voice-ID software, using martial arts, tech skills, and sex appeal. Charlie's private investigation company is addressed by programmer Eric Knox, owner of Knox Technologies, whose revolutionary voice-recognition software has been stolen. Charlie's Angels Natalie, Dylan and Alex are sent to place a bug in the system of bitter rival Roger Corwin, who is under strong suspicion. But after the deed is done, the Angels and their boss Bosley face the fact of a destroyed home basewellCharlie's life in immediate danger. But how do you protect someone you never met? Badmuch of its output has been, even television has rarely plumbed the depths of awfulness that it managed to achieve week after week back in the 1970's with `Charlie's Angels,' a show designed for no purpose beyond allowing us the privilege of watching a trio of beautiful, scantily clad women playing (badly) at being modern day action heroes. Now that we find ourselves, almost a quarter of a century later, faced with the prospect of the inevitable big screen version of the show, we are forced to ask the following question: is it possible to take a god awful series like this one and turn it into something more than simply a god awful movie? Apparently not. The movie version of `Charlie's Angels' turns out to be every bitinane, cutesy, cloying and boringthe original series. And even worse the actresses who play the new angels aren't nearlyprettythe old ones.

Never content to be an out-and-out parody like `Get Smart,' `Charlie's Angels' chose instead to cut a clumsy swath between fantasy and reality, with the result that it was never funny enough to be a comedy, never exciting enough to be a real action show. The movie aims for essentially the same middle ground and achieves the same dismal results. Despite the best efforts of an obviously game cast who certainly seem to be having a better time performing in the movie than the audience is having watching it all we get, essentially, is a string of highly incredible action sequences punctuated by unfunny jokes and slow motion close-ups of the girls making cutesy faces at the camera. It's hard to blame Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu for being unable to provide what the script fails to deliver in the way of wit or imagination, although, if the truth be told, the film actually does improve a bitit moves along. Also, Bill Murray brings an assured comic touch to his roleBosley, the go-between for the girls and their boss, Charlie.

I can't predict how fans of the original series will feel about this particular incarnation. As a confirmed NON-fan of the show, I can only say that this version is yet another in a long line of films that demonstrate the utter paucity of quality story ideas floating around Hollywood these days. SKEPTICS, BEWARE!!! This film is fun, funny, sexy and action-phat. Film starts with an inventive morph from the Col/Tri-Srar logo, into an airplane, then goes to a self-aware joke about the in-flight movie, and then, rockets into action… An action scene that actually elicited an audible a "wow" from me. That exclamation was only two minutes into the film and probably had more to do with Long Beach native, Cameron Diaz's, string bikini than the boat or the scene. "Charlie's Angels'" pace is driven by the eclectic soundtrack that ranges from frenetic (Prodigy's "Smack my ***** up") to the nostalgic (Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancin'"). "Angels" has you rooting for the sexy femmes and against their sharply drawn enemies for the film's entirety. Stunt choreography and production values are excellent a s, I'm sure, are BO projections. First time director "McG" (Joseph McGinty Mitchell) and Flower Productions (Drew's Company) can expect 5-picture deals, if they don't already have them. "Charlie's Angels" is a perfect Mai Tai mix of camp, sex, action and fun. That's a bold statement coming from a skeptic. The most charming bad movie ever spun off a hit TV show.
